If you think training a puppy is about shouting at them and smacking them with newspapers, you are completely wrong. It's not even about trying to rub their nose in it when they potty on the carpet. It is about TEACHING them that they are expected to potty outdoors and helping them become successful at it so they learn more quickly. You get much, much, much faster results when training your dog by using positive reinforcement rather than negative. It might seem that I only believe this because I am a puppy and I do not like to get hit with a newspaper, but that's not the case. Anyone who actually knows how to train a puppy realizes this is a fact. Everyone else only THINKS they know how to train a puppy. They are really giving you poor advice.
Use A Dog Crate
Like it or not you 'must' have one, you have to use it and the puppy actually does not hate it. The puppy will need to go potty as soon as they be free from the dog crate and immediately after they play. If you take them outdoors immediately after these two events, the potty training thing is going to be much easier. Our evil new dog typically pee'd on the way to the door at the beginning, then each week was capable to hold it a little longer.
After you or the kids play with the puppy, immediately carry them outdoors... yes... again. Then the puppy will be tired so put them in their kennel. Follow a routine with the new dog. Dog kennel, potty, play, potty, kennel, potty, play, etc. When you take them outside to potty, take them to the place you want them to use and say whatever key word you're going to use until they go. Another big key is to really go crazy when the puppy goes potty when and where they're supposed to. What I really mean is that you should be very, very happy for the pup they will learn that peeing outdoors is a very good thing.
Towels
The cleaning up got much easier for us once we chose to use towels. The boss collected all the old light bath towels and put them on the kitchen countertop. When the evil puppy pee'd on the carpet, we soaked it up with a towel, sprayed the carpet with a vinegar/water combination and tossed the towel in the bathroom sink. Any time the bathroom sink was full, we threw the bath towels into the washing machine. When you use towles, not using laundry softener will make them more absorbent. We used a carpet cleaner on the bad places once per week until the evil puppy finally got smart enough to only potty outside. It took almost forever since she's really not that smart... however I am not supposed to say that out loud.
Really... learning how to house break a pup isn't really the tough part. The hard part is the effort it takes. Really teach them that they're supposed to potty outside. Take them outside IMMEDIATELY after they get out of their crate, after they play, as soon as they eat, etc. Take them to their special potty area. The only hard part of potty training a puppy is to complete all of these steps every time until the pup is trained. The more work to put into it, the more quickly it will happen.
